The original, which is lost, consisted of a standard urinal, usually presented on its back for exhibition purposes rather than upright, and was signed and dated ‘R.
West 67th Street, reoriented it to a position 90 degrees from its normal position of use, and wrote on it, R.
Thus was begun the existence of one of the most influential art works of the 20th century.

Duchamp created first in miniature for his(1935–41, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1950-134-934).
Around this time the Baroness met, and became somewhat obsessed by, the French-American artist Marcel Duchamp.

In 1935, Duchamp began , a catalogue of his work to date.
